MIRI: Sarawak Oil Palms Berhad (SOPB) wants to be an active contributor to the local community by conducting various economic supported and social programmes, especially in areas of education and healthcare.

“This is in line with our corporate social responsibility with the tagline ‘We grow together with local communities’.” its assistant group financial controller Tho Kheng Chiang said at the closing of ‘Model Building for Science and Mathematics Learning’ here yesterday.

Acknowledging that scientific advances and technological changes are important economic drivers, Tho said for 50 years, the group had been steadily planting, milling, refining and trading top quality palm oil products to 27 countries worldwide.

To commemorate this golden anniversary of remarkable achievement, the company has been conducting events and sponsoring meaningful school programmes.

“As a co-organiser of this Science and Mathematics exhibitions and competition, SOPB likes to portray to the community its support and commitment in producing the next generations of scientists, mathematicians and engineers in our homeland,” he added.

The event was also meaningful in that it promoted innovation through sharing of experiences and knowledge among one another.

“Through the competition, we were able to promote students’ interest in science and technology, and encourage scientific creativity among students,” said Tho.

SOPB conducted the competition in collaboration with District Education office and SMK Chung Hua, Miri.

Thirty-two teams from primary and secondary schools here took part in the competition, which was divided into three categories – Category A (primary school), B (lower secondary) and C (higher secondary).

SMK Chung Hua Miri principal Albert Ong Ngee Hong was also present at the function.
